Writing has never been easy, but there are few tips that can turn your writing from poor to amazing. Grab these 10 amazing tips for brilliant writing today and become a better writer.

1. Say something meaningful

Writing something that sounds smart, but doesn’t mean anything is as stupid as writing it. To make your writing better, make every word count.

Make notes, read a lot, and choose your topic wisely. Then share that information. It really is as simple as that

2. Go into detail and be specific

Being specific is not a bad thing. By going into detail when you portray something helps the reader to imagine it better. Some writers might leave some things more open for different reasons, but most of the time you want to be as specific as possible when writing about things.

For example:

  • I have two cats sitting on my sofa.
  • I have two cats, where one is grey with long fur while my other cat is black with short fur, and they are sitting on my leather sofa.

Which one do you think is more entertaining and informative for the reader and which sentence would you rather read?

3. Don’t complicate your text

With this simple tip we mean, don’t use complex words for no reason. For example, if you need to tell something is near, just say it’s near. Don’t use phrases like “in the close proximity”, because it will only confuse your readers for no reason.

Using complex words just to sound smart doesn’t make you smart and will only frustrate your readers in most cases. The age-old “KISS” (Keep It Simple Stupid) -rule applies here as well.

4. Write daily

Sounds like a lot of work, but the more you write the better you will become at it. So keep on writing every day and we can assure you that you will become a better writer.

5. Keep it short

Keep your sentences short and informative. Even though it’s good to be specific with your information, it’s even better to keep them as short as possible. Long sentences tend to drag and are harder to read and understand.

6. Active voice over passive voice

Try to stick to using active voice with the SVO sentence method. SVO in short means Subject, Verb, and Object. You can’t do this always, but in most cases, anyone reading English prefers reading an active voice when compared to a passive one.

7. Don’t neglect context

Remember that the person reading your text might not have the same information as you do. Fill in the gaps and provide the information required to understand your text. There is no need to explain the entire backstory, but it’s always good to fill in the pieces that are required.

8. Proofread thoroughly

Something we can’t stress enough is proofreading. Always and we really mean this, ALWAYS proofread everything you write thoroughly. You make more mistakes than you think.

9. Don’t ramble

A lot of writers tend to ramble. Rambling is something most of us do without even thinking of it. Read your texts over or ask your friends to read them to check that you’re not rambling on secondary subjects.

10. Edit ruthlessly

I get it. You have been writing your heart out, but let’s face it. Most of us write way too much text. So make sure you read everything you write and edit it ruthlessly. Shorten, rewrite and delete anything that is not on point and important to the thing you’re trying to explain.

A simple method for editing is:

  • 1. Write your entire text.
  • 2. Set the text aside for a few hours (or days).
  • 3. Get back to your text and start editing it.

It is that simple and with this method, you will make your text ten times better. Watching your writing with new eyes usually opens you to many earlier mistakes you would have completely missed if you had proofread and tried to edit your text instantly.
